For all you Jujube (ziziphus jujube) fans…

Other Names: Red date, Chinese date, Bora/Bor/Ber, Ponsigne, Yuyubo

Wow! Found this boutique farm in Brentwood, N.California (East Bay area). It’s a woman-owned & family-operated, USDA certified organic grower. We picked fruit of the five jujube cultivars they grow. The fruit is sweet in all stages i.e. green, green-brown & full-brown. Picking jujube from the tree is the best; farmers-market & asian-market bought jujubes don’t compare at all. Picking time is September thru October.

The owner Jane and David provide good information about their farm products and the medicinal benefits of the fruit & trees. They also have Pakistan-mulberry in April (will pick next year). Make sure you try out the complementary mulberry leaf tea. Also, purchased some very thin sliced mulberry-branch and mulberry-leaves for tea. Both have several medicinal properties (google search for details). Must visit; trees are about six feet tall and filled with fruit from top to bottom, very easy to pick.

Lots of ripe fruit within arms reach & easy to pick -no ladder needed. There are many berries in multiple stages of ripeness & I was encouraged to taste the different colors of berries so I know what I prefer: green was unripe, light pink was firm & sweet, dark purple was extremely sweet & soft. They have two varieties: yellow mulberries and black mulberries. There were only about 7 yellow mulberry trees & very few fruits, though they were delicious! My favorite is the dark, dark ones-they’re as sweet as candy and so much healthier!
